Globalstar has successfully launched its six satellites into space on a Soyuz rocket facilitated by Starsem venture, from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Arianespace / Starsem CEO and president Jean Ives Le Gall said that the launch initiated another milestone in the cooperation.

“Three more launches are planned for 2011,” he added.

The second-generation satellites will separate from the Soyuz-2 rocket in two stages.

The satellites will be used for communications and to provide data to businesses and government agencies, replacing first-generation satellites launched in 1999.

Globalstar president Antony Navarra said that the company had a lot of launch options to choose, but picked Russian Soyuz as it can inject the spacecraft to the altitude of 900km and higher, so it can put its satellites directly into the targeted orbit.
