Major US airlines have joined with those in European to oppose aircraft subsidies provided to airlines in other nations to purchase aircraft from Boeing and Airbus.

United Continental Holdings and Delta Air Lines has signed an agreement with British Airways, Air France and Deutsche Lufthansa, according to Bloomberg.

The airlines’ move aims to influence negotiations under way over the subsidies at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to help them coordinate new policies.

In 2007 and 2008, the Export-Import Bank provided nearly two-thirds of its long-term loan guarantee, amounting to $10bn to Boeing.

Currently, airlines in countries where Airbus or Boeing planes are manufactured, including the US, UK, Germany, Spain and France, are not eligible for subsidies.
