Raytheon has received two contracts for the joint polar satellite system, a successor to the national polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system (NPOESS) programme.

The contracts replace previous government contracts worth about $1.4bn awarded by Nasa on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The previous NPOESS contract was for the final integration of the first flight unit and the remaining efforts for two additional sensors.

JPSS has satellites and sensors supporting next-generation civil weather and climate measurements and is the civilian part of the restructured NPOESS.
