ITT will supply the cross-track infrared sounder (CrIS) instrument for the first joint polar satellite system (JPSS-1) to Nasa.

ITT has received the $98.6m sole source contract from Nasa, acting on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Under the contract, ITT will manufacture, test and deliver the CrIS, support instrument integration on JPSS-1, and provide launch and post-launch support.

The instrument will be identical to the CrIS planned for flight on the national polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system (NPOESS) preparatory project mission.

JPSS, the restructured portion of NPOESS, includes satellites and sensors to support civil weather and climate measurements.

The JPSS 1 spacecraft is expected to launch in 2014.
