Nasa has completed a fuel tank check on its gravity recovery and interior laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft.
The size and fit of the components need to be confirmed as a necessary step before welding the spacecraft’s fuel tanks into the propulsion system’s feed lines.
The GRAIL mission will fly twin spacecraft in tandem orbits around the moon for several months to measure its gravity field in detail.
The mission also seeks to explore the lunar surface and provide a better understanding of the evolution of the Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system.
The spacecraft is due to launch in 2011.
