Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has demonstrated a 35% greater throttling range for the common extensible cryogenic engine (CECE).
The new CECE tests are the fourth series of tests by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, developed under a Nasa contract to demonstrate cryogenic engine technologies for space exploration.
One of the technologies being tested is deep throttling – developing a wide range of thrust to enable a spacecraft to maintain adequate thrust for in-space travel and allow it to power down for a precise, gentle landing.
Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne CECE program manager Victor Giuliano said that, in all, they had demonstrated the ability to deliver a thrust range from 104% of rated power down to 5.95%.
“This equates to an unprecedented 17.6-to-1 deep-throttling capability in a cryogenic engine, ” he said.
