ITT has delivered an advanced infrared sensor to Ball Aerospace, which will be used on the preparatory satellite for the national polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system (NPOESS).
The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) will be integrated and tested on the NPOESS preparatory project (NPP).
ITT Geospatial Systems Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems vice president and general manager, Rob Mitrevski, said its CrIS instrument will provide the most advanced measurements of temperature and moisture profiles in the atmosphere to date, specifically for enhanced weather forecasting and long-term climate prediction.
The CrIS will provide more than 1,000 infrared channels of information compared with the 20 provided by the existing sensors, and at an improved horizontal spatial resolution.
The component will also measure temperature profiles with accuracy approaching one degree Kelvin, compared with the accuracy of two to three degrees Kelvin for currently operating infrared sensors.
The sensor has been developed by ITT under contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation. The first unit flies onboard the NPP next year.
