Astrium is to develop technologies for new re-ignitable upper stages for new launchers for the European Space Agency (ESA).

Under the two-year contract, Astrium will develop advanced technologies to enable the engines of the cryogenic upper stages of rockets to be re-ignited.

The €20m ($24.5m) cryogenic upper stage technologies (CUST) project will focus on fuel management in the state of zero-gravity and on the thermal insulation of the fuel tanks filled with cryogenic fuel.

The firm will work on issues including maintaining the fuel in a liquid state in zero gravity and directing the fuel to the feed lines of the engine.

In 2011, two experiments will be launched aboard the Texus sounding rocket to support work on this project.
