The German Aerospace Centre’s (DLR) second earth observation satellite, TanDEM-X, has been successfully launched into space aboard a Dnepr rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The Astrium-built radar satellite will operate in sync with its twin, TerraSAR-X, which has been operational since 2007, to provide a homogeneous 3D elevation model of the Earth.

The satellites will fly in close formation to take simultaneous terrain images from different perspectives.
The elevation model will be used in a range of geoscientific applications including hydrology, oceanography and efficient mining of the Earth’s natural resources.
The 1.3t satellite has a design life of 15 years and will enable the creation of the elevation model by 2013.
