China has successfully launched a scientific research satellite into space from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China’s Gansu Province.

The Shijian XII has been developed to carry out scientific and technological experiments, and includes a space environment probe for measurement and communications, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the satellite was put into orbit atop a Long March 2D rocket.

The mission marks the 125th flight of Long March rockets, which have been in development by China since 1970.
