The International Launch Services Proton launch vehicle has successfully launched, carrying Arabsat’s BADR-5 satellite to a geosynchronous transfer orbit

Collocated with the BADR-4 and BADR-6 direct-to-home satellites at Arabsat’s 26°E longitude video, the 5,420kg satellite will provide communications for the Middle East and North Africa region.

The BADR-5 satellite uses Astrium’s E3000 platform, while Thales Alenia Space supplied a communications payload.

The BADR-5 carries 56 Ku-band transponders and four Ka-band transponders, and is expected to have a design life of at least 15 years.

This was the fourth ILS Proton launch and the sixth overall Proton launch of 2010.
