Rolls-Royce has successfully completed running the latest core engine build in its E3E (efficiency, environment, economy) two-shaft engine research.

The 3/2b core engine underwent 40 hours of running at the Stuttgart University altitude test facility, Germany, and exceeded flight envelope requirements, according to Rolls-Royce.

E3E technologies will increase engine temperature, pressure ratio and component efficiencies and lead to a 25% increase in thrust to weight ratios.

The technologies, designed to serve the corporate and narrowbody sectors, will also reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions by 15%, compared with similar engines currently in service.

Engine design began in 2003, and intensive combustor and high-pressure turbine rig programmes continue to support the core 3/2b demonstrator.

Further core 3/2s will be tested in 2011 and 2012.
