Honeywell Aerospace is to look into the effects of volcanic ash on the engines of aircraft that have flown through the air plume.
The company’s engines power several of the planes used to collect scientific data after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano in April and May, according to the UK Press Agency.
The planes, which are operated by Germany’s national aeronautics research centre (DLR) and the UK weather service, accumulated hours of flying in the clouds.
Honeywell propulsion systems vice-president Ronald Rich told the UK Press Agency that the two TPE331 turboprops fitted to the German Dornier 228 had been returned to Phoenix, Arizona, US, to be disassembled and analysed.
