SES World Skies plans to undertake a set of orbital manoeuvres to steer away its AMC-11 satellite from Intelsat’s malfunctioning Galaxy 15 spacecraft, also being called a zombie satellite.

The synchronised drift will protect AMC-11 services from interference caused by Galaxy 15.

As the stray satellite nears AMC-11’s orbital location, SES will match its orbital speed to the zombie’s to maintain an acceptable separation between the two.

SES will also move its new SES-1 satellite to the opposite side of Galaxy 15 to enable some customers to leapfrog their broadcasts, avoiding interference caused by the wandering spacecraft.

The adjustment will allow SES clients to either maintain services on AMC-11 during its drift, or repoint antennas to SES-1 to protect their services.

The manoeuvres will begin on 25 May and the risk of interference is expected to end on 7 June when Galaxy 15 falls out of its orbit about 22,000 miles above the Earth’s surface.
