A Libyan Afriqiyah airline Airbus A330 travelling from Johannesburg, South Africa, has crashed while attempting to land at Tripoli Airport in Libya.

Officials report that 103 of the 104 onboard, 92 passengers and 11 crew, were killed in the crash including UK and South African citizens, according to Reuters.

The sole survivor is a Dutch child, according to Libyan officials.

The causes of the crash are still unknown, with reports suggesting the weather was unlikely to blame as sunny and clear skies have been reported over the north African country for the past few days.

The plane, which crashed at 06.10am local time, was set to stop in Tripoli before travelling on to London Gatwick Airport, UK.

Officials at Tripoli Airport said they had no information concerning possible survivors, and that the relevant authorities were conducting a search and rescue mission.
