Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) plans to purchase six new aircraft worth $356m from Airbus to recapture its declining market share.

The national flag carrier will acquire two widebody aircraft for $94m each and four narrow body aircraft for $42m each from Airbus according to a new business plan submitted to Nepal’s finance ministry.

The new aircraft will add to the airline’s international fleet and will be deployed on routes to Japan, and will connect Nepal to Europe with direct flights for the first time.

NAC currently holds a 7%-8% share of the market and flies a Boeing B-757 and a 757-200, each providing 190 seats capacity on its international routes.

NAC executive chairman Sugat Ratna Kansakar said that NAC aimed to regain up to 30% of the total market share within four or five years.
