The orbital altitude of the International Space Station (ISS) is to be raised by 1.7km using a Progress M-04M space freighter.

A Russian mission control spokesman was quoted by Ria Novosti as saying that the manoeuvre would be performed by the eight boosters of the Progress M-04M, which is currently docked with the Zvezda module on the ISS.

The change in orbital altitude will bring the space station to an altitude of 348km above the Earth’s surface.

The correction is part of a regular routine to compensate for the Earth’s gravity and safeguard successful dockings before Russian spacecraft and US shuttles launch to the ISS, according to Ria Novosti.

The next ISS mission on a Soyuz TMA-18 spacecraft is scheduled for 2 April 2010.
