The second prototype of the Sikorsky 76D helicopter has completed its first flight test.
The latest version of the S-76, the S-76D, is powered by Pratt & Whitney 210S engines and will provide an increase in useful load and extended range performance compared with the S-76C+ and S-76C++ aircraft.
The S-76D features composite flaw-tolerant rotor blades, advanced avionics systems and autopilot, dual rotor speed for quiet-mode operation and an optional rotor ice protection system (RIPS) for all-weather capability.
The prototype successfully completed its initial test card during a 30min flight.
Sikorsky S-76D Helicopter deputy programme manager Jesse Bavaro said that the first flight of the D2 is important to the S-76D helicopter programme as it allows the company to begin testing the engines for certification.
The D2 will undergo rigorous tests to validate the performance of the new PW210S engines and, along with the D1, will facilitate FAA certification of the S-76D helicopter.
