Lockheed Martin is to build GeoEye 2, a new-generation earth imaging satellite system for GeoEye.
GeoEye chief operating officer Bill Schuster said that GeoEye-2 will be the same class of satellite as GeoEye-1 but will have enhanced capabilities to serve demand for increased quantities of higher resolution imagery.
The spacecraft will feature advances in agility, resolution and flexibility over its predecessors IKONOS and GeoEye-1.
“Some of these improvements include enhanced tasking capabilities and the ability to collect more imagery at a faster rate,” Schuster said.
GeoEye had previously asked ITT to do advance work on the satellite’s advanced optics and camera.
GeoEye-2 is due for lift-off in late 2012.
