Boeing has successfully performed the first engine runs for the 747-8 freighter as part of the 747 programme in preparation for flight test.
The engines were started and operated at various power settings during the initial runs to ensure all systems performing properly as expected.
During the test run the first of four General Electric GEnx-2B engines was powered by the auxiliary power system, while the cross-bleed function was used to start the remaining three engines.
A team conducted basic systems checks throughout the test, where the engines were powered down and inspected, and will be restarted following a technical review.
The team also performed a vibration check and monitored the shutdown logic.
The GEnx-2B engine, which is optimised for the 747-8 freighter programme, will provide customers with improved fuel efficiency, reductions in emissions and noise and a lower cost of ownership.
