The Sri Lankan Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has signed an agreement with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) to provide an earth observation satellite to the nation, and design and develop its first telecommunications satellite.

The project will include training and development, and collaboration between the University of Surrey and Sri Lankan academic institutes to promote academic, industrial and socio-economic development.

The partnership will enable Sri Lanka to become an important member of the disaster monitoring constellation to support international disaster relief activities coordinated by the UN.

SSTL will also advise on the establishment of the Sri Lankan Space Agency (SLASA).

SSTL’s professor Sir Martin Sweeting said that their close partnership will allow Sri Lanka to fully embrace the benefits of space technology through training and education while stimulating industrial development.

“The economic benefits resulting from space-based communications including TV and broadband services, and earth observation applications are substantial and will positively contribute to the country’s development as a high-tech trading nation,” he said.
