Independent research body TWI Wales has launched a new £3.8m ($6.1m) research project that could speed up the production of composite materials used in the aerospace industry.
At present, the speed at which these materials can be produced is limited by the time taken to inspect them for quality.
The four-year project could speed up the quality inspection process by 400% by using advanced, non-destructive testing technologies, according to walesonline.co.uk.
Improving the inspectibility of the aerospace composite materials project involves an industrial collaboration with Rolls-Royce, GKN Aerospace and Bombardier Aerospace, with academic support from Swansea University, Swansea Metropolitan University and the University of Wales, with WAG funding.
TWI Wales regional manager Philip Wallace said, “The advances in composites had not been matched by advances in inspection capability.”
