United and American Airlines have filed a lawsuit to block financing of the expansion of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in the US.

The airlines have moved the court to declare that the city of Chicago is under obligation to get airline approval, as per the leases signed by them and the city, for the last phase of the O’Hare modernisation programme (OMP) budgeted at $3.36bn.

The airlines have also asked the court to bar any construction of the completion phase.

The lawsuit said, “These kinds of capital projects require airline scrutiny and approval because they increase airport costs, which the airlines pay for through landing fees and other rates and charges imposed by the city.”

Chicago’s aviation department said it was willing to discuss the modernisation programme with the airlines that serve the airport: however, timing was essential, according to Reuters.

The department said, “The opportunity to realise the OMP’s benefits for the region and national aviation system cannot be lost.”
