Air Berlin has signed a deal with ICBC Financial Leasing for 18 narrow-body aircraft equipped with CFM engines.

The deal, which includes new and used craft, is worth nearly $700m.

It includes the sale of four Boeing B737-800 and six Airbus A320-200, as well as the sale-and-lease-back of two Airbus A319-100, two A320-200 and four Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Air Berlin said most parts of the deal will complete in 2011 and 2012.

In November, Air Berlin announced that it would reduce its fleet of aircraft by seven planes in 2011, to cope with the pressure of an air passenger tax that will become effective in Germany that year.
