Russia’s Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos, will launch the Glonass-K2 global navigation system in 2013.

Roscosmos’s Central Research Institute of Machine Building deputy director, Sergei Revnivykh, said the new satellite would be modernised with an upgraded signal downloading system.

The new satellite, designed for both military and civilian use, will provide three new code-distinguished signals in L1 and L2 bands for special users, and one in L1 band for users.

Glonass-K1 satellite will be launched in December from the Plesetsk Space Centre 800km north of Moscow.

There are currently about 26 Glonass satellites in orbit, and three more Glonass-M satellites are expected to be launched by the end of 2010.
