The European Space Agency has issued a “preliminary authorisation to proceed” to Thales Alenia Space to commence development of the Meteosat third generation (MTG).

The approval marks a significant milestone for Europe’s next fleet of meteorological satellite series, which will consist of four MTG-I imaging and two MTG-S sounding satellites.

The MTG will be designed by Eumetsat and ESA to ensure continuity of high-resolution meteorological data beyond 2037.

The satellites will also analyse the different layers of the atmosphere to provide deeper insights into the complexities of its chemical composition.

The first MTG-I satellite is expected to be ready by the end of 2017, with the first MTG-S expected in early 2019.

Thales Alenia Space will be the prime contractor for the MTG-I imaging satellite, while OHB will be the prime contractor for the MTG-S satellite.
