Iran is considering improving the safety standards of its aviation fleet in order to minimise potential risk to passengers.
Iranian Civil Aviation Organisation head Reza Nakhjavani said Iranian airlines had been asked to remove all Russian-made Tupolev aircraft from their fleet of passenger jets by 19 February 2011.
“Under no circumstances will will Iran allow passenger planes lacking essential safety standards to fly and endanger people’s lives,” he said.
Nakhjavani said all Iranian air carriers that use Tupolev aircraft will have to replace them with planes that meet fuel consumption and safety standards.
The aviation chief said that Tupolev passenger jets, which have been in use as air carriers in Iran for more than 20 years, are not adequately equipped for a safe flight.
More than 20 Tupolev aircraft are currently used by different Iranian air companies, according to Presstv.
