Russia has successfully launched the US SkyTerra-1 mobile satellite aboard a Proton-M carrier rocket from the Kazakh Baikonur Space Centre.
Developed by Boeing, the 5,390kg SkyTerra 1 will provide voice and data services to mobile phone users.
The satellite has a 22m L-band reflector for mobile terminal links supported by a 1.5m Ku-band antenna.
The SkyTerra 1 and its twin SkyTerra 2 will provide the world’s first commercial mobile satellite service using space and terrestrial elements.
The Briz-M upper stage with the satellite will separate from the third stage of Proton-M 581 seconds after launch.
After five impulses of the booster unit, the satellite will be sent to 101.3&176;W on the geostationary orbit with the orbit inclination of 51.5°.
