Air New Zealand has awarded a one-year contract to Pratt & Whitney for its EcoPower engine wash service to reduce fuel burn.

Under the contract, Christchurch Engine Centre, a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and Air New Zealand, will use the portable equipment to perform washes in Auckland or Christchurch in New Zealand.

The service will be performed on all Air New Zealand’s existing fleet, including CFM56-3, V2500, CF6-80C2, RB211-524G, Trent 800 engines, GE90-115B and Trent 1000 engines.

Air New Zealand group general manager of technical operations Vanessa Stoddart said the EcoPower engine wash would help reduce fuel burn and decrease engine gas temperature to increase the amount of time an engine can stay on wing.

Pratt & Whitney product line management vice-president Andrew Tanner said EcoPower engine wash was an innovative way for Air New Zealand to further lessen its environmental footprint while reducing operating costs.

Tanner said it would help Air New Zealand to reduce fuel burn by an additional 500,000gal a year.
