A passenger plane has crashed in Cuba, killing all 68 passengers and crew on board, making it Cuba’s deadliest crash since 1989.
The state-run Aerocaribbean aircraft was flying towards Havana from Santiago de Cuba in the east of the country. Cuba’s Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed that rescuers have found no survivors at the crash site.
The ATR twin turboprop crashed in mountains in the Santi Spiritus province, and the 68 on board included nine Argentines, seven Mexicans, three Dutch, two Germans, two Austrians, a French citizen, a Spaniard, an Italian, a Venezuelan, a Japan resident and 33 native Cubans.
A tropical storm warning had been in place in Santiago de Cuba province and the pilot had reported an emergency before contact was lost, however it is not yet known if bad weather was a factor.
