Nasa has delivered magnetometers to Lockheed Martin for the Juno mission to Jupiter.

Each of the two vector magnetometers carries a pair of non-magnetic star cameras to determine its orientation in space with accuracy.

Juno, the second mission in Nasa’s new frontiers programme, is due for launch in 2011.

The mission will undertake studies of the origin and evolution of Jupiter, with nine instruments onboard to investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map its intense magnetic field, measure water and ammonia levels in the deep atmosphere, and observe its auroras.

The Juno magnetometers will study Jupiter’s powerful magnetic field, which is about 20,000 times as strong as the Earth’s.

Lockheed Martin is building the spacecraft, while the Italian Space Agency will provide an infrared spectrometer instrument and a portion of the radio science experiment.
