ESA has signed a contract with Spaceopal that will provide the ground-based services required to operate the Galileo constellation once it is fully operational.

Spaceopal is a joint undertaking by Telespazio and Gesellschaft für Raumfahrtanwendungen (GfR), which has been set up by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) to provide operational services for the Galileo system.

The agreement is the fourth of six Galileo Work Packages (WPs) identified by the European Commission and ESA to reach Galileo’s full operational capability (FOC).

The WP6 framework contract is dedicated to preparation activities and all operations services for the fully deployed Galileo system.

The contract covers all activities for completion of the Galileo in-orbit validation activities with the first four Galileo satellites due to launch next year, and implementation and activities of an integrated engineering team supporting ESA for system operations.

The contract also includes completion of deployment of operations for Galileo’s FOC, due in 2013, and full deployment of the two Galileo ground control centres in Germany and Italy.
