Russian space freighter Progress has successfully used its thrusters to manoeuvre the International Space Station (ISS) to avoid a collision with fragments of space debris.

The Russian Mission Control Centre (MCC) boosted the ISS orbit by about 700m by increasing its speed by 0.4m a second.

In the point of dangerous approach the station was 1.5km above the space garbage, according to ITAR-TASS.

MCC spokeswoman Valery Lyndin had said that if specialists of the MCC decide that the approaching has become dangerous, they will make an emergency correction of the ISS orbit.

“The approach is called dangerous if the possibility of a collision is 0.001%,” she said.
