UAE-based composite aero-structure provider Strata Manufacturing has collaborated with German conglomerate Siemens to develop 3D-printed aircraft interior parts for Etihad Airways.

As part of the deal, 3D aircraft interior components will be developed under a pilot project, which combines Siemens’ digitalisation and 3D printing expertise to consult on the selection of materials, testing and the preparation of processes with Strata’s manufacturing capability.

To be produced at Strata’s manufacturing facility, the parts will be certified by the design team of Etihad Airways Engineering.

With the partnership, Etihad intends to receive improved, complex and discontinued aircraft parts in less time.

Etihad Airways Engineering CEO Jeff Wilkinson said: “The biggest challenge for the use of flying 3D-printed parts in aviation is certification, and we are ready to tackle it and make it a reality.

“Etihad Airways Engineering will be using its expertise and major design certification approval (Design Organization Approval – Part 21J) to design and certify the first 3D-printed part for aircraft cabin in the UAE.

The latest partnership will also enable Strata to explore 3D printing technology for various applications to improve its manufacturing processes in aerostructures in several areas, including tooling, fixtures and consumables using metallic and non-metallic materials.

Siemens currently offers a 3D printing portfolio, which features computer-aided design (CAD) software, control, automation and drive systems for additive manufacturing machinery and others.
