Air navigation services provider (ANSP) Slovenia Control’s Ljubljana Area Control Centre has successfully completed shadow operations in Slovenian airspace as part of Phase II of ‘Air Traffic Management (ATM) Data as a Service’ (ADaaS) project.

The operations were carried out using data processed remotely at Eurocontrol’s Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC).

A three-year project between Slovenia Control and Eurocontrol’s MUAC, ADaaS aims to develop and implement a prototype in order to demonstrate that ATM data can be provided from an operational ATM environment as a service to one or more civil air traffic service units (ATSUs) by a single distributed ATM system.

The ADaaS project contributes to the Single European Sky (SES) initiative by implementing latest technologies and suitable practices.

ADaaS is co-financed by the European Union’s (EU) Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) amounting to €2.45m.

In June 2016, Phase I of the joint ADaaS project was successfully completed by the expert teams from the two ANSPs, while the next step of the project was completed in March 2016.

During the first phase, the teams managed to successfully overcome the operational and technical challenges related to the project within a limited period of time.

Phase II saw the demonstration of the use of an open interface between the MUAC flight data processing system and Slovenia Control’s controller working positions / human-machine interface.

The data processed remotely at MUAC was displayed and used on three varied types of controller working positions in the Slovenia Control simulator during the second phase of shadow operations.

The human machine interface was adapted to communicate with the newly-developed gateway, which serves as a mediator and enables an open interface by applying system-wide information management (SWIM) principles.

Planned for the third quarter of this year, the final phase of the ADaaS demonstration will involve a distributed flight data processing system in the MUAC and Slovenia Control locations.

The ADaaS demonstrator can also serve controller working positions / human-machine interfaces either remotely or locally.

The final phase of the project will offer important information on how to deploy an advanced data centre from which an ATM data service provider (ADSP) can deliver services to ATSUs with proper contingency and disaster recovery.
