"Our in-service experience on the Boeing Dreamliner and our rigorous improvement programmes give us the platform to deliver the best engine for the 787-9," he said.

The Trent 1000 Package C will be the launch engine for Boeing’s latest Dreamliner aircraft, 787-9, which will enter service with Air New Zealand in 2014.

Capable of providing 74,000lb thrust, the engine will also power 787-8 aircraft that are planned to enter service in the later part of 2014.

Optimised to deliver improved fuel burn rate of 1% over the Package B engine, two Trent 1000 Package C are currently being built for initial flight testing on the Rolls-Royce 747-200 flying test bed.

In addition, a three-month programme is also scheduled to take place over the summer, where the new advanced turbine case cooling system of the engines will be optimised to improve efficiency.

Rolls-Royce had delivered Trent 1000 engines to Boeing to support 787 Dreamliner test flights for ETOPS approval of the engine / aircraft combination and to All Nippon Airways (ANA) 787 Dreamliners to begin passenger service in 2011.

The production standard engines will be delivered by Rolls-Royce from 2013 to support Boeing’s 787-9 flight test programme.
