Philadelphia international airport

The City of Philadelphia has mooted a plan to Philadelphia International Airport in the US and has proposed an alternative site in a bid to save 72 houses and 10 businesses from being demolished in Tinicum Township.

The new plan, proposed in response to concerns over noise and a negative impact on business, will see the United Parcel Service operations relocated to another spot in Cargo City.

The alternative plan would involve relocation of freight carriers including FedEx to Cargo City, and the US Airways maintenance facility would be shifted to the airport’s northwest corner, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The airport’s original capacity enhancement programme (CEP) aimed to create an enhanced airport for Philadelphia to serve as a new and modern global gateway to the region.

“The new plan will see the United Parcel Service operations relocated to another spot in Cargo City.”

In June 2012, a joint venture known as Global Program Partners led by CH2M Hill was selected to manage the airport’s expansion programme, estimated to entail an investment in the range of $6.4bn to $10.5bn.

With expected completion in 12 to 15 years from the date of commencement of work, the project includes construction of a new runway, the extension of two other runways, construction of an automated people mover and a new ground transportation centre.

The expansion project also involves new corporate hangars, construction of merged rental car facilities and associated parking, in addition to airport support including rescue and fire fighting.

The project also calls for relocation and expansion of a fuel farm, a new de-icing facility, relocation of air traffic control (ATC) tower, new centralised airport maintenance facility, cargo city facility and shifting the existing UPS freight-handling facility.
