GKN-Aerospace-and-SAMC

UK-based GKN Aerospace and Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Company (SAMC) have extended their memorandum of understanding (MoU) and entered into further agreements for the intellectual property rights (IPR) and development of structures for the COMAC 919 aeroplane.

The revised MoU was signed by GKN Aerospace Europe and special products CEO Phil Swash and SAMC president Weiguo Shen at the ongoing Airshow China 2012.

GKN Aerospace with SAMC, a subsidiary of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), will manufacture and assemble the composite horizontal tail plane (HTP) for the next-generation, twin turbofan, narrow body, 150-seat jetliner.

Made using advanced composite processes, the carbon fibre HTP will feature two major torque-box assemblies combined at a centre rib and includes elevator assemblies.

GKN Aerospace and Land Systems chief executive officer Marcus Bryson said the ongoing success of this collaboration with SAMC reflected the expansion of GKN’s working relationship with China and a crucial technological step forward in the design and manufacture of advanced composite components and structures.

On completing the HTP development activities phase, both companies will set up a manufacturing joint venture, which will be named Shanghai GKN-SAMC Aerospace Composite Structure Manufacturing.
