Indonesia’s flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is planning to increase its fleet size by 200-250 aircraft over the 2015-2025 period, in a move to address the demand in growing aviation markets.
Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event in Hong Kong, Garuda Indonesia chief executive officer Emirsyah Satar said that the airline intends to purchase some aircraft directly from manufacturers and lease the remainder.
The carrier aims to retire aircraft in the coming years as it adds more jets with a plans to increase the fleet to 350-400 with an average age of six years by 2025.
In September, Garuda Indonesia operated 131 aircraft, which will be increased to 194 existing orders and impending retirement by 2015.
The airline is looking for single-aisle jets for routes of nearly five hours, and larger wide-body jets for medium and long-distance flights, Satar told Reuters.
While Boeing’s 737 Max and Airbus’s A320neo will satisfy the airline’s short haul requirement, Boeing’s 787 and 777 and Airbus’s A350 will be considered for its medium and long-haul needs.

The deal includes a firm order for 25 jets and an option for ten more, with deliveries scheduled to begin before the end of the month.
