The Chang’e II satellite, China’s second lunar probe, has successfully entered lunar orbit.
The satellite will be manoeuvred into an orbit 15km above the moon by the end of October.
The satellite will be able to take high-quality photographs of the moon’s surface with a 1.5m resolution.
Chang’e II will relay high-quality images of the proposed landing sites for Chang’e III, particularly the Bay of Rainbows, over a period of six months, according to bernama.com.
Launched on 1 October from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, Sichuan, the Chang’e II satellite is part of China’s three-phase space programme to land an astronaut on the moon by 2020.
