Astrium is to acquire Jena-Optronik, a German provider of space sensors and optical systems.

Jena-Optronik develops attitude sensors and space-based optics for a variety of different platforms including Earth observation (EO) satellites and the laser guidance system for the European International Space Station supply vessel, ATV.

The acquisition will complement Astrium’s expertise in Germany and enhance its reputation in the development and production of sophisticated Earth observation satellites.

Once necessary approvals have been obtained, Jena-Optronik will be owned by Astrium, but will remain an independent German firm with its individual brand.

Astrium will benefit from enhanced access to optical technology to remain at the forefront of developing sophisticated optical sensors and instruments.
