Carrying three science instrument suites, the MAVEN spacecraft will probe the upper atmosphere of Mars to learn about the Martian atmosphere in the context of solar activity.

Lockheed Martin, the industry partner for the mission, will design and build the spacecraft and perform flight operations.

The spacecraft is scheduled for launch in November 2013 and arrival and orbit around Mars is scheduled for September 2014.
