The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a safety programme that will integrate voluntary safety information self-reported by pilots and air traffic controllers.

The data-sharing programme will provide the FAA with a more complete picture of the national airspace system by collecting, assessing and reviewing safety events from the perspective of pilots and air traffic controllers.

Under the programme, information from the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and the Air Traffic Safety Action Program (ATSAP) will be merged to guide safety decisions.

The programme will develop processes and policies to share and analyse relevant safety information consistent with the basic principles of safety management systems.

FAA signed the first agreement with United Airlines to participate in a demonstration programme and is expected to sign similar agreements with other carriers in the future.

ASAP encourages aviation employees to voluntarily report safety information that may help identify potential precursors to accidents.
