CEA-Leti has completed the development of a new-generation scalar magnetometer in partnership with CNES for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Swarm space mission.

The mission, scheduled for launch in 2011 or 2012, will provide a survey of the Earth’s magnetic field and its temporal evolution for new insights into the understanding of the Earth’s interior and climate.

The new absolute scalar magnetometers (ASM) will overcome the limits of the previous nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnetometers.

The ASMs, to be fitted to the three satellites for the Swarm mission, will simultaneously provide measurements over different regions of the Earth.

The tested prototype matches the orbiting magnetometers to be delivered to ESA by the end of 2010.
