Russia launched three satellites, the Gonets-M satellite and two Cosmos series satellites, into space on 8 September 2010.

The satellites were carried to their orbit on a Rokot launch vehicle, which blasted off from the Plesetsk Space Centre in northern Russia, according to Xinhua.

The Gonets-M communications satellite will be part of Russia’s Glonass satellite navigation system, equivalent to the US global positioning system (GPS).

The Cosmos satellites are to be used for military communications.
