Rolls-Royce is yet to reopen an engine test site that trials jet engines for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus SAS A350 after a $17m turbine blew up on the test bed.

Rolls-Royce spokesman Josh Rosenstock told Bloomberg that the exploding Trent 1000 engine caused limited debris to be released into the test facility.

Minor repairs to the site in Derby, UK, will be completed shortly, according to Rosenstock.

The European Aviation Safety Agency, which approves new aircraft and components developed in the region, has sent an official to the UK following the test-bed incident.

The Trent 1000 engine has a maximum thrust of 75,000lb, a fan diameter of over 2.7m and weighs more than 5t. It will power Boeing’s Dreamliner.
