Virgin America will acquire 40 Airbus A320 aircraft under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two firms at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK.
The airline will decide on its choice of engines for the additional aircraft once the purchase agreement is finalised.

Virgin America may also choose the Sharklet option for the MoU, which will be offered by Airbus on A320 aircraft from late 2012.
Virgin America currently operates 28 Airbus aircraft including ten A319s and 18 A320s, and will put a total of 22 more purchased and leased A320s into service by the end of 2012.
Once finalised, the new MoU will expand the Virgin America fleet to a total of 90 Airbus aircraft.
