The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded three separate next-generation air transportation system (NextGen) contracts totalling up to $4.4bn over ten years.

Boeing, General Dynamics and ITT won the contracts under the System Engineering 2020 (SE2020) scheme.

The firms will conduct large-scale demonstrations, including the use of aircraft as flying laboratories, to see how NextGen concepts, procedures and technologies can be integrated into the current system.

FAA administrator Randy Babbitt said NextGen was an intricate network of systems involving everything from air traffic control to weather.

“We need to have the right tools to make sure we integrate all these different components safely and smoothly,” he said.

Other work under the contracts includes development and roll-out of modernised weather services.
