Sikorsky Aircraft’s X2 Technology demonstrator aircraft has achieved a speed of 181kt in a test flight.

The X2 is designed to demonstrate that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250kt while retaining attributes such as low-speed handling, efficient hovering, and a seamless and simple transition to high speed.

Combining an integrated suite of technologies, the demonstrator intends to advance the counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter.

Sikorsky Advanced Programmes programme manager Jim Kagdis said the X2 Technology demonstrator today exceeded average conventional helicopter speeds, generally 160kt-170kt.

“The demonstrator is proving the technologies very well, from the active vibration control system to the fly-by-wire controls,” he said.

“We are flying forward to the 250kt cruise speed.”
