The Discovery space shuttle has successfully lifted off to the International Space Station on its STS-131 mission despite facing a radar glitch moments after take-off.
A Ku-Band antenna on the spacecraft did not complete its standard initial activation sequence after reaching orbit and is presently non-operational.
The dish-shaped antenna provides high rate communications and images to Earth and is used for the shuttle’s radar system during rendezvous with the station.
The shuttle, however, will be able to complete its planned mission objectives even without using the Ku-Band antenna, which helps in voice and data transmission.
Discovery also has multiple systems acting as backup for the rendezvous radar system.
The shuttle is carrying supplies and equipment for the ISS and the 13-day mission will involve three spacewalks.
